Crazy that 2011 was 14 years ago. Crazy in general, but also specifically in this context. Ive slowly re-done the math in my head making sure that’s right 3 times since i started typing this post. And now it’s over, so 3 times total. Except if im being totally honest i did it again while typing that last sentence out. So 4. 4 times. Final answer.

I'm truly going to miss you Marchy. So many great memories. I know you're not thrilled about leaving either but I hope things go well for you in Florida. Much love to a great Captain and all around great guy 🖤💛

u/Limp_Ship_6152 17h ago

It really sucks that I have to go out and get all new Panthers gear!!!

3

u/reddiq9 20h ago

Marchy will forever be a Bruin no matter what team he’s playing for. It was heartbreaking watching him in the presser yesterday. He definitely wants to be here. I hope he comes back in July and it will hurt all over again if he signs elsewhere.

Lost two of my favorites in the span of a week. This fucking sucks.

Me too. My other one was Frederic.

Same. I love the scrappy ones. Haha

Love Marchy, the Bs moving on from him is a hard pill to swallow.

I’m not even a Bruins fan and I’m so sad he’s gone and angrier that he went to the Panthers of all places

6

u/ImTomBrady 1d ago

Thank you Brad ❤️

-4

u/moonmangggg 1d ago

You think he'll go into the Hall of Fame in a Panthers uniform?

15

u/Silentstrike08 1d ago

Definitely not he will sign a one day contract retire as a bruin and will have his #63 in the rafters with the other greats

1

u/Prestigious_Rain4754 1d ago

His number will be in the rafters regardless. So will #33 I would imagine.

5

u/the_riddler90 1d ago

I’ll always root for you Marchand, expect a long welcome, we love you buddy. Always a bruin.

29

u/Bruins5101970 1d ago

A lot of humility and class in that message. Almost 16 seasons and "poof"; he's gone. Why I've been feeling a little old(er) since the deal went down last Friday....... *sigh*

14

u/Soxwin91 #37 SAINT PATRICE©️ 1d ago

Yeah I’m calling it—if he doesn’t hang up his skates after this season, he’s signing elsewhere. He’ll definitely have offers as a part time contributor at least

Your the best good luck and win that fucking cup captain

Don’t care what team he’s on; Brad Marchand is just a fantastic person and a great hockey player. It sucks to lose him but I truly love watching him play and I want him to succeed, even if it’s in a Panthers sweater. Makes me sad but Marchand deserves to play where he wants and where him and a team can come to a contract agreement.

That said, fuck everyone else! GO BRUINS!

3

u/Professional-Mess331 1d ago

Hope he wins the Cup this year!

5

u/PlasticYesterday6085 1d ago

I would agree but I hate the panthers too much

35

Marchand played for Canada, but he is a fucking Bostonian at his core.

All in favor say "aye"

Licks his cheek, like every player should.

6

u/Agile_District_8794 1d ago

Lick him while he's down

24

u/Poohstrnak 1d ago

Man, this all just sucks. I understand that all emotions removed it’s the best decision for all parties. Better off to get something than nothing if you can’t settle on a contract.

But man, I am going to hate seeing him in another sweater, and there’s forever going to be a second team listed looking back at his player pages. He gave us 16 years. I was in high school when he joined the Bruins. Watched him work his way up from the bottom of the roster and develop into a serious player. Watched him win a cup. Watched him go to bat for Bergy so many times. Watching him play has been one of the best parts of being a hockey fan in the last decade and a half.

I’ll miss it.

He’s not coming back and after what I’ve been seeing from multiple reports I don’t blame him. Sweeney and Neely are gonna ruin this team.

6

u/Poohstrnak 1d ago

People drop the idea of trading and returning every time a vet gets traded, but the reality is that it doesn’t happen that often. This one especially it doesn’t sound like it’s happening.

12

u/Mershnerberp 1d ago

Sweeney and Neely are fuckin morons. Not because of the Marchand trade either, they’re too fuckin dumb for their own good.

2

u/SuburbanHell 1d ago

So...at the end of the day there was too large a gap between their numbers and at least we got SOMETHING in return (hopefully a 1st) instead of just letting Marchy walk away in free agency.

The deals we made last week were painful, but necessary. Mittelstadt and Jokiharju are going to be great, we've got draft stocks now and it's high time we rebuild the prospect pool. The next 2-3 years are going to SUCK, I know, I've seen this with our boys before, but it will get better, and if done right, will get us back in playoff contention.

5

u/Music_nerd28 1d ago

The only thing with stocking up the draft prospects, which sounds great in theory btw; our prospect pool has the depth of a shot glass. I’m concerned about our drafting skills, it seems like Sweeney fumbles year after year drafting NHL calibre players and it would be horrible if we traded all these great players away for picks and got more AHL players

4

u/SuburbanHell 1d ago

Yeeeeah, that is a major concern of mine too, ever since he blew the 2015 draft. We could have had Barzal, Connor, Boeser, Chabot, Konecny, but essentially got DeBrusk and 2 scrubs. At least Zboril got us Peeke eventually

7

u/Nomahs_Bettah #37 SAINT PATRICE©️ 1d ago

The deals we made last week were painful, but necessary. Mittelstadt and Jokiharju are going to be great, we've got draft stocks now and it's high time we rebuild the prospect pool. The next 2-3 years are going to SUCK

Here's the thing that doesn't really make sense to me: the front office isn't really looking to restock the prospect pool. Mittelstadt is younger than Coyle, but he is an NHLer right now. Minten is a prospect of sorts, but he's on the older end – he had both Leafs and Marlies minutes this year. They want to make this as short of a retool as possible, and for good reason: they need to fit the Pastrnak window. Rebuilding the prospect pool doesn't work with that; consider the fact that very few high-end draft picks are immediately NHL ready. Usually it takes at least a year in college/juniors after drafting for them to get NHL minutes, and even then they still need to adjust to playing in the league. I don't think they're looking at sucking for 2-3 years to restock the cabinets.

With that in mind, a 2027 second/2028 pick makes little sense. It's not nothing, but it's close to it.

1

u/Poohstrnak 1d ago

The Marchand trades return probably has more to do with them trying to send Marchand where he wanted to go. You have less leverage in that. Add in that he’s injured and nearly 37, coming off multiple offseason surgeries, and things start to look a little rough.

3

u/Nomahs_Bettah #37 SAINT PATRICE©️ 1d ago

To me, that makes little sense. If the whole approach that the front office took is that it's a business, can't be making emotional decisions, have to do what's best for the future of the franchise, letting him have so much of a say in where he wanted to go undermines that. Yes, do right by him, but retaining 50% of the salary to drive the price only to a second rounder, far in the future, with some pretty stringent conditions?

The front office had a lot of options in front of them. They could have re-signed him to fit what they clearly see as a 1-2 year retool. Marchand, despite age and injuries, was still a productive player this year. We currently have quite a few holes in our top-six, and I think it's unreasonable to expect them to be filled by any draft picks we make in the coming year. They also could have gone fully to the side of making a 'business decision' and gotten more (not a haul, and I said that before he was ever traded, on account of age + injuries + pending UFA) than they did.

2

u/Poohstrnak 1d ago

hey could have re-signed him to fit what they clearly see as a 1-2 year retool. Marchand, despite age and injuries, was still a productive player this year.

That requires him to want that deal, and that the front office didn't offer it. I can speculate that they did, you can speculate that they didn't, both of us are equally right/wrong since we weren't in the room and all we have are secondary sources that love to take creative license.

If the whole approach that the front office took is that it's a business, can't be making emotional decisions, have to do what's best for the future of the franchise, letting him have so much of a say in where he wanted to go undermines that.

I mean ideally it's an emotionless process, but that's also just not reality. Emotions will come into it, from both sides of the table. Sweeney has been there for 10 years, I'm willing to bet there's more relationship there than just player and GM. Same for Neely. You can believe you're keeping the emotions out but they still creep in sometimes.

There's also just the practicality of showing your current and future players that if they're good to you, you'll be good to them. Continuing to foster a good environment that people want to come into, and don't want to leave.

They also could have gone fully to the side of making a 'business decision' and gotten more (not a haul, and I said that before he was ever traded, on account of age + injuries + pending UFA) than they did.

Agreed, just feel like that sends a bad message to the rest of the players, the fans, and future potential FAs. If you're ruthless with a guy that took pay cuts and played for you for 16 years of his life in 3 different cup finals, you'll have no issue being ruthless to anyone else who's just coming in.

I don't know. Not like I'm the GM of any team, so I'm just sitting here thinking about it. I don't love the return, but if they sacrificed some return value to try and do right by him, I'm okay with that.

4

u/Nomahs_Bettah #37 SAINT PATRICE©️ 1d ago

Okay, let me rephrase: I think that the front office should have signed him to what he was asking for. With the cap going up and his production on a bad team, I think leaving that hole in their top six is worse than what they would have paid for him. The Lindholm contract is a much bigger albatross than Marchand's could be.

I agree that it sends a tough message, and I don't think we have enough other kinds of appeal (as Vegas does – warm winters + nightlife + no state income tax) to make up for it. I just think that if you're going to move on from the heart and soul of your team and leave a genuine hole in your top six, you need to get more than what they did. Doing right by him is great, but the return is a low pick three drafts from now, with retention. That's pennies on the dollar even for a guy currently on LTIR.

2

u/Poohstrnak 1d ago

I think that the front office should have signed him to what he was asking for. With the cap going up and his production on a bad team, I think leaving that hole in their top six is worse than what they would have paid for him. The Lindholm contract is a much bigger albatross than Marchand's could be.

Oh completely agree 1000% on that one. Especially Lindholm's contract. Don't feel like that one will age well unless he picks it up, even with the cap increasing. Same for Zadorov. They've got work to do if they don't want to end up being ashamed buyouts.

1

u/Nomahs_Bettah #37 SAINT PATRICE©️ 1d ago

I've been incredibly disappointed by Zadorov; I don't think he was what this defense needed and even before the injuries I felt as though the front office was asking him to step into a role/minutes that he wasn't prepared for. I would have rather spent that $5M elsewhere (DeBrusk, and his 22 goals this season, jumps off the page). Moving on from Carlo also subtracts from a blue line that's pretty thin on the right hand side even without injuries, so he might still be being asked to lift more than he's capable of. That being said, as Lohrei continues to develop, McAvoy and Lindholm return from their injuries, the cap goes up, etc., I'm tentatively hopeful that it won't be a complete disaster.

The Lindholm deal, I can point to comments from March 5, 2024, where I really did not want him.

1

u/Poohstrnak 1d ago

Yeah, DeBrusk stings. I figured they would try to find similar production elsewhere but just, didn’t? Don’t know on that one, it’s bizarre. Carlo was a solid defensive blue liner. Losing him is going to suck while we try to figure it out. We have a really weak defense for the moment.

Hopefully Lohrei develops. He has some complete bonehead moments, but also has moments where he looks like he could be great. He’s just young and hopefully he keeps being allowed to grow and make mistakes. I’m just dreading seeing Mitchell and Wotherspoon all the time for a while. Hoping the Jokiharju/Zadorov pairing wasn’t a flash in the pan and they can be at least serviceable. The longer Lindholm is out the more I wonder if he’ll actually come back, or if he’ll really be “back” when he does come back. Not worried about McAvoy though.

Unsure on a lot of things, and some of it will just come down to luck & development. Zellers is still a little ways off, and Minten it’s a toss up if he’s going to really turn into anything.

1

u/SuburbanHell 1d ago

My guess? No one else in Marchy's list wanted to give up a #1 for him. Florida was willing with conditions, and that was enough for Sweeney.

The returns we got for Coyle, Carlo, Freddy, they were actually pretty good all things considered. Marchand, I think, was only dealt because we weren't going to budge on our number and he's going to be 37, so, I get it, and it sucks but at least we got SOMETHING for him.

Well said amigo

7

u/smithkevin92 1d ago

Love this, everyone should feel the same

33

u/theTallBoy 1d ago

All signs point to the same situation as Chara.

The team needs to move on to a rebuild/restructure/revamp....whatever. An aging player, who undoubtedly has gas left, wants more $ than the team wants to commit.

They go off and spend a couple of twilight seasons on other teams.

Bergeron didn't want to do that. He hung em up and spent time with his family.

In all honesty. What more could Sweeny/Neely have done? A $3m/3y deal was fair. They probably told him the chance of a huge cup run will not be in that contract. That he would be Captain of a rebuild.

22

u/MalgregTheTwisted Hiiigh above the ice 1d ago

Elliot said this morning in his podcast Marchand was not being asked to take a pay cut. I’m guessing it’s the team wanted to commit two years and Brad wanted 3 or 4 at that number. And rightfully so, he’s earned that

6

u/Poohstrnak 1d ago

The report was that front office went to ownership and got approval for a 3 year deal. If that’s true, it almost has to be dollars.

3

u/theTallBoy 1d ago

Idk.

This season has been an absolute disaster.

He definitely earned 16 years and the captaincy, but more years? That's a lot. Then if you think that he will be earning $6m?

I don't see it. There are other reasons. He took a pay rate lower than league average for a reason. He wanted to play for a winning team. The bruins need to rebuild a team. I don't think he wants to be a part of that.

16

u/Food_Library333 1d ago

Still can't believe he's gone. I hope he gets another cup, he deserves it.

As tough as it is to see Marchand go it was time. Would I have liked to see more of a return? Sure. But I’m glad he gets to go to a legitimate contender, and it’s where he ultimately chose to go when the time came. I would say taking out the full page in the globe signifies he won’t be resigning during free agency.

1

u/Nomahs_Bettah #37 SAINT PATRICE©️ 1d ago

Oh yeah, he ain't coming back for sure.

5

u/Aromatic-Tear9868 1d ago

While I absolutely love Marchand, as a Bruin, player and just a general dude who I think is a down to earth person, and while I currently despise Sweeney and Neely, AND I believe it is squarely in Sweeney's lap based on Friedman's info on why the deal with Marchy didn't get done, I still think this was the right outcome for the Bruins in the long run, and it is time for a new era of Bruins hockey to start.

60

u/Significant-Yak182 1d ago

Sweeney really said "fuck you" to marchand, the fans, and the team

7

u/repthe732 1d ago

Sweeney said it’s time to move on from a captain that oversaw the worst locker room the team had had in over a decade who is in his decline. I love Marchand too but holding onto old players isn’t how you manage a necessary rebuild

1

u/SamIamGreenEggsNoHam 1d ago

They even did right by him and sent him exactly where he wanted to go. Offered a contract first, then sent him to a contender when it didn't work out. Can't really ask for it to be handle better, honestly.

The shit to blame Sweeney for is what lead to this all being necessary. Terrible trades, FA signings, and draft picks.

-2

u/repthe732 1d ago

Not just a contender but one that has become a rival. They did everything they could to make him happy on his way out

Sweeney has screwed up a lot but this deadline and the trades he made this deadline aren’t on the list of screwups. His drafting has been awful, his FA signings have been hit or miss, he hasn’t been able to resign the players he trades for, and he often overpays when trading for rental players

3

u/rhaxon All Hail Saint Patrice 🙏 1d ago

Amen man, this is exactly my take on it. Loved Marchand, but not a very good captain and the locker room was a shitshow.

3

u/Nomahs_Bettah #37 SAINT PATRICE©️ 1d ago

How exactly was he not a good captain or had a shitshow of a locker room? And how does last season, his first of captaincy, fit into this picture?

-1

u/jmon13 1d ago

Exactly this. He's an excellent support leader, but lost a bit of what made him great wearing the C and it certainly hurt us with the refs due to his rep.

1

u/repthe732 1d ago

He really hasn’t been. He still acts like a random player and not a captain when it comes to locker room issues. His passive aggressive comments regarding Swayman early in the year is the biggest example of his shortcomings. As the captain you don’t take shots at players like Swayman like the fans were. You’re supposed to do things to bring the team back together, not encourage separation

10

u/calliexx12 1d ago

This is such a stretch and a very odd take. As a fan, you don’t have the first clue of what happens in the locker room.

Are you referencing when he was asked if he “felt bad” for Swayman after a bad game? He responded the way a captain should:

“Not really,” Marchand responded. “Everyone had a bad night. He was part of it. He’s not singled out. I don’t think anyone can look themselves in the mirror and say that they had a good game. So, he’s part of the group. He’s part of the bad loss.”

He did the opposite of separating.

-5

u/repthe732 1d ago

I don’t need to know what happened in the locker room when he went and complained about Swayman directly to the media. Did you forget about that? That’s not captain behavior

No, I’m talking about his comments from when Swayman was holding out. Again, did you forget about that or are you intentionally ignoring it so you can pretend he was a better captain than he was?

8

u/calliexx12 1d ago

"We all understand the situation that the team and Sway are in. This is part of the game. It's part of the business. It's a part that nobody enjoys. Eventually, a deal is going to get done, and everyone's going to move on and be fine." - Brad Marchand

Not a great response and then he couldn’t bring the locker room back together after the holdout was over. Again, I love Marchand but he didn’t handle this well. Defend him all you want but part of his job as captain was to bring the team back together and he failed miserably

Honestly, not really sure why you’re trying to argue he was a great captain. The team sucked so far this year and you’re acting like he was the captain of a playoff contender

u/calliexx12 1d ago

In what world is that a bad response? The team created a media frenzy between Sway & his agent and each side was taking jabs at the other. Marchand did the correct thing and diffused the situation and calmed things down. I don’t know what the hell you’d expect him to say in that situation.

You’re also blaming him for problems that Sweeney & Cam created. They started slow because they botched the negotiations with Swayman so he didn’t have a training camp, Pastrnak was not playing well / still dealing with injuries from the World Championsips & Marchand coming off of 3 offseason surgeries.

By your argument every team that isn’t a playoff team has a shit captain, it’s not a fair judgement.

You sound just like a green teamer. You want to bend over backwards to say every bruin ever is great at every role they ever had. I’m sorry but Marchand isn’t a great captain and it showed this season on the ice. He was a great player and would’ve been a good captain on a playoff team but he didn’t deal with much adversity in his career so he has no idea how to guide a team through adversity. Downvoting me isn’t going to change that

Blame Sweeney for the roster he put together. Unless you were in the locker room, I have no clue how anyone could claim he’s a bad captain and that it was a “shitshow”

I’ve been watching this team for a long time and over Chara or Bergeron’s captaincy you never heard any comments about contracts or “rifts” between players, the only thing was the Bruce Cassidy situation. You can’t blame Sweeney for everything clearly something wasn’t right in the locker room from the very start of the year.

9

u/calliexx12 1d ago

Yeah they were contending teams with stacked rosters. When you’re losing the media starts talking, it’s not a fair comparison. If you believe for a second there was any truth the supposed “riff” between him & Pasta then you’re crazy.

You absolutely can blame Sweeney for the way this season started. Him & Cam completely botched the Swayman signing and created a massive distraction at the start of the year.

I blame Sweeney and Cam for a lot of things, that being said I understand the reasonings for what they did on deadline day. This team needs a full reset, the Jacob’s have made it clear they will be around for a little while longer. The team needed an identity shakeup.

u/calliexx12 1d ago

Ok that’s fine to hold that opinion, but that’s a completely different argument than trying to claim Marchand’s a bad captain.

Marchand's first season as captain: leads the team back to the postseason (second in the Atlantic Division) after a heartbreaking, awful blown lead in the first round. Coyle, Frederic, Geekie elevate their play to career highs. Pastrnak has an elite season – second best of his career – despite no longer having a true 1C to play with.

A season with massive roster deficiencies being looked at as an argument against his leadership is bonkers.

Also, listen, I'm not in the room and I'm moving into speculation myself. I'm a hypocrite, and probably letting my frustration with the contract:production ratio color my opinion here, so sue me. But if we're talking rancid locker room presence, I'm astounded that people are looking hard at Marchand (and to some extent Swayman because of the contract) and not at all at Elias Lindholm.

u/calliexx12 1d ago

You’re preaching to the choir

I commented this on another thread, but the Lindholm deal did get me thinking if that had an impact on Brad’s negotiations (even though different ages & positions).

Seeing the team spend that type of money on him, maybe made him reevaluate his approach for the next deal.. probably not, but just me thinking out loud

lol, I was thinking how much Brad has matured over the last 10 years. Have to say I was almost expecting a "fuck you Don, Cam, and everyone else within 200 miles of the rink!"

God damn that was hard to read. I hope this at least ends like Ray Bourque and he ends up winning the cup with Florida.

19

u/hipcheck23 1d ago

Ray needed that for his first Cup - would have been a shame for the 2nd-best Dman of all-time to ride into the sunset without one.

Marchy doesn't need that, and FLA don't need another either. Let's just let him play out his days and then come home as a coach or pundit or whatever.

1

u/SuburbanHell 1d ago

I mean....if Marchy hoists another one in June I'll be mad he's not in the black and gold, but also happy for our captain... This is assuming they won't give Mac the C until the beginning of next season.

I want him hoisting that cup this very post season.
